Book Review: Yes! 50 Scientifically Proven Ways to Be Persuasive

Ever wonder why some ad campaigns are huge successes and others flop? Ever find yourself thinking that someone made a great argument only to find yourself still doing the opposite? As humans, there are many triggers that affect us and influence our decision making on a subconscious level.  Yes! 50 Scientifically Proven Ways to Be Persuasive reveals 50 of these lessons and backs them up with real world examples and studies that may surprise you.

I'd like to highlight a few of the cases that were particularly interesting to me:

Dan Pickett: Find Your Founder: Five Romantic Tips From a New Technical Cofounder

Finding someone to start a venture with you is tough business. Being a newlywed and finding many similarities between this and getting married, I always tend to associate seeking a cofounder with dating. So, I've assembled five tips for you that should help set the mood.

Book Review: The Dip by Seth Godin

Every once in a while a book comes along that despite a seemingly simple subject ends up being a very impactful and thought provoking book.  Seth Godin's "the dip" proves to be exactly that type of book.

"the dip" is all about understanding opportunities and yourself; there are many things we can all spend our time doing, but how many of them can you be the absolute best?  And how do you tell the difference between the struggle before success and the slow, painful death-march to failure?

As the book cover suggest, there's really two parts, which I'll highlight now: When to Quit and When to Stick.

Takeaway from #MoSum- The Momentum Summit: We Need More Lunches

Yesterday's Momentum Summit was one of the best events I've been to in quite some time. The interview format of the main part of the event seemed to work quite well as great lessons and takeaways emerged from the entrepreneur asks entrepreneur format.  (We liveblogged notes you can find here).  However, as great as that was, the most important part in my opinion were the lunches.

During the lunch portion, groups of 8-12 startupers huddled around tables to talk to successful founders about topics of the founder's choosing. Some of those topics included David Cancel of Performable discussing the importance of A/B testing, Antonio Rodriguez of Matrix Partners discussing VC funding and at the table I sat at, Matt Douglas of myPunchbowl discussing "Startup-Deals That Build Momentum". (for a complete list of lunch topics see here).

Q: How is the IPO Going?

There are many challenges. It's a volatile situation.

Dan Croak: A View of the Cloud from the Ground

A few terms in the technology industry are frequently misused and misunderstood:

 - Web 2.0

 - The cloud

 - Agile

 - NoSQL

 - HTML5

I’d like to examine one of those terms, “the cloud”, from the ground, as a web developer who works mostly with Boston startups.

Venture Screening: How to Decide Whether or Not to Pursue a Venture

Every Entrepreneur uses different methods to validate an idea for starting a venture. So the next time you think you got that great crazy new idea, follow the 3 steps of venture screening to help you determine if you should pursue it or not.

***Note: any of the following can be done individually but it is always a good idea to have a discussion with a few friends, family, and people you trust.

Founder Fridays: Blank Label

Who are the faces behind a company? How did the company get started? These are common question you may have about startups you see and hear about. If you don't get a chance to personally meet the founders, you're unlikely to ever know their story.  That's where we're starting Founder Fridays.

Each week, we'll profile a different startup (with ties to Boston) through a simple interview that highlights some of the simple questions that make all the difference for a startup like, "How did you meet your co-founders?" and "What was the best advice you ever received?"

This week, we have Fan Bi from Blank Label, who you may have seen getting awesome coverage the past few months in places like the New York Times and MSNBC

Aaron Gerry: My Philosophies for Having a Conversation; Have Fun!

Part of being an entrepreneur is the fact that you have to network, network, network.  Whether you have started ten companies or are new to the scene, it’s an inevitable aspect of life.  The beautiful part of meeting new people, though, is that you never know where a conversation will lead; you can make new friends, find potential partners or simply have an engaging conversation -- take a chance, start a conversation and get out there!

To preface, this is my mindset: you have something you are passionate about and I want to hear all about it.  I’m a listener by nature and would rather ask questions than talk.  I love learning and if you have something interesting to say (everyone does) then I’m in this conversation for the long haul.

Without further adieu, these are my “guidelines” for having a conversation:
