Founder's Friday: MyBike Online

Who are the faces behind a company? How did the company get started? These are common question you may have about startups you see and hear about. If you don't get a chance to personally meet the founders, you're unlikely to ever know their story. That's what Founder Fridays is all about.

This week we're profiling LeRoy Watkins III of MyBike Online, a company that changes the way you think about bikes.

Manners Matter: How Saying Please and Thank You Help With Brand Engagement

My advertising class last year had a public relations professional come speak about her industry. Her number one mantra? Write hand written notes after you contact someone. I'm not going to lie, I was very cynical when I first heard this. Probably as cynical as you are right now. I thought to myself, how can writing a handwritten note make any difference? The truth is, it can.

What Boston Needs: Higher Quality Startup Events

For almost a year now, I've been curating the Greenhorn Connect calendar and going to as many startup events as I can.  During that time, I've seen an explosion in the number of events; the early days saw about 20 to 30 events a week to now we've had as many as 80 events in a single week.

I'd love to say that all of those events we've added are high quality, can't miss events, but that fact is, our ecosystem is filled with a lot of events basking in mediocrity.  Their thematic content, whether it be a panel discussion or brief speaker often lack enough takeaways to add serious educational value, and the networking is often equally weak as the crowd quickly thins after the main content.  To make our ecosystem stronger, we need to create a barbell system for our events.  Confused? Read on.

Chris Williams: How can we create more cleantech + tech startups in Boston?

As I've been venturing more and more into the tech scene in Boston, I've been seeing fewer and fewer of my green buddies. I don't feel the lack of overlap between the groups is on purpose or because the two groups are not compatible, it just happened.  However, I do feel the groups are very compatible and are on a crash course and I'm curious how we can increase collaboration between the groups.

Who are the faces behind a company? How did the company get started? These are common question you may have about startups you see and hear about. If you don't get a chance to personally meet the founders, you're unlikely to ever know their story. That's what Founder Fridays is all about.

Listen up, Boston. Bill Warner has something to say...

The Boston community has come a long way since last year, but there is still plenty of discussion about our problems and new challenges. This is most recently reflected by Roy Rodenstein's post yesterday. Fresh off the unConference and his new angel investments, I felt it was a great time to ask Bill for his thoughts.  He's not just betting on Boston, he's doubling down. You should too. Read on:

Tim Chae: Why "That's Interesting" Is a Bad Sign

If you are a founder of a startup and have ever pitched to an angel or a VC with your company/idea/concept, I'm sure you've heard the phrase "That's very interesting."  Maybe they even added a convincing, "hm..." as if they are seriously pondering about your idea and now you think they might be completely agreeing with you that your company is going to be the Next Big Thing.

Guess what?  It's not.

In fact, they will probably not even follow up with you even if they said they would.

Sorry about the reality of the startup world.  But hey, we're all young and whatever you are working on now is most likely your first real startup so we're here to learn and get better.
