Justin Miller: How I found the right job
In today’s job market, people often find themselves being less picky and more apt to finding a career solution for “right now” as opposed to “just right.” A year out of college I would consider my experience to be somewhat out of the norm. With some hard work and resourcefulness, I was able to find the “just right” job.
Getting started
While my fellow peers spent the summer partying and the fall/winter scrounging for work, I had a job out of college with a major political campaign. Starting off as a lowly volunteer coordinator, I quickly worked my way up the ladder and held a social media specialist position where I spent my days blogging, tweeting, and posting content on the campaign site. Once the campaign was coming to an end I panicked and took a job that albeit was a great experience and position, in charge of marketing and business development for an office and school furnishing company, but probably not the best fit for me.
Once I was realized that perhaps I could do more with another opportunity the question became: “well where?...and how do I find it?”
Finding “just right”
Now I had the luxury of being picky and really finding the job that I could fit well in, but I considered my specialty to be in new media where there didn’t seem to be too many avenues for job openings. There was LinkedIn which occasionally had some jobs, Craigslist too, but I didn’t even bother with the black hole that is Monster; it wasn’t until I spoke with Marsh Sutherland of SocialGrow and the Boston BizSpark Meetup, until I got my first big lead. I explained my experience and what I was looking for to Marsh and he immediately pointed out GreenhornConnect.com.
Greenhorn Connect was a perfect fit for someone like me who is young, still relatively new in the business but looking for challenging jobs from great up and coming companies. I applied to 2 jobs on Greenhorn both of which called me back within the same week. When I interviewed with both companies I felt excited about the potential possibility of being a part of both companies as they were exactly what I was looking for, especially Workbridge Associates where I was interviewing for the Marketing Manager position. Fast forward a week later and I’m the proud new owner of a new job on Newbury Street in downtown Boston all thanks to Greenhorn Connect.
I would recommend any prospective tech or media job candidate check out Greenhorn Connect before trying any other site as they offer unique positions with great new companies. Aside from a job board, GHC offers resources and guides to help on not just the job search, but just advancing as an entrepreneur or tech and media professional.
