Vision, Mission, and Gameplan
Every now and then, you come to think of an interesting idea and try to figure out what next steps to take. Follow my three-step approach of turning your idea into reality.
Vision
What is your end goal for starting this venture? What do you want to get accomplished? Who’s problem are you trying to solve?
These are the types of questions you should be asking yourself and really understanding the “big picture” reason for even taking on this project.
As you move toward creating a team and building out your venture, you can explain where you want to end up and see if potential members are on the same page. Without a clear it becomes difficult for potential team members, co-founders, investors, and even customers to understand why your product or service exist.
An example would be: “Creating social and technological change for third world countries to enhance their quality of living.”
Mission
Your mission is the next step, after the vision. How are you going to accomplish your vision? What is unique or different about the way that you solve a problem in comparison to competitors and substitute?
Vision is big picture, mission is OK this is how we’re going to do it.
An example would be: “One Laptop per Child (OLPC) is to empower the children of developing countries to learn by providing one connected laptop to every school-age child”
In the mission, you understand what OLPC wants to accomplish, for whom, and how they are going to.
Gameplan
The vision is there, mission set, what’s next? You tell me…. That is exactly what the game plan is.
Figuring out milestone to achieve in order to accomplish your mission. I like to create a one-year plan, three and six month detailed objectives, and one-year goal.
I wrote a previous post called Milestone Based Planning which includes the steps required.
So what are you waiting for? Be creative, do your homework, and get cracking on that idea you had while on the subway, while eating lunch, or right before you go to sleep.
