Startup Spotlight: She Geeks Out

December 13, 2015

This week as part of our Startup Spotlight we speak to Felicia Jadczak, co-founder of She Geeks Out, a start-up that provides  a safe space for women in STEM to connect and learn.

GC: What is your name and role?
FJ: Felicia Jadczak, I’m the  Co-Founder of She Geeks Out along with Rachel Murray.
GC: What does She Geeks Out do?
FJ: She Geeks Out hosts monthly events in the Boston and Cambridge area. These events are designed to bring amazing women together in super cool sponsor spaces, promote networking, and allow us to learn about and from each others’ geeky pursuits. We eat, drink, mingle, and hear from awesome local ladies.
GC: How did She Geeks Out get started?
FJ: She Geeks Out originated as the Boston Girl Geek Dinners group. Our first event was held in June 2013, and was sponsored by VMware. After hosting a series of events for a little over a year, we decided to formalize the organization. We re-branded in late 2014 and officially launched in April 2015.
GC: What have been some issues you’ve had to overcome?
FJ: Early on, we were confronted with some pushback to our mission of being a women-only group. This forced us to take a step back and reconsider whether this was in fact something that we cared about, and actually define our mission.
There were some difficult conversations, butwe decided to hold firm to what our community wanted rather than give in to what others thought we should be.

GC: What did you learn from your first members?
FJ: Our community has been wonderful from day one. We have learned that networking doesn’t have to be scary, and we’ve also learned what women in the greater Boston area geek out about. (spoiler– it’s all the things!).
GC: What has the Boston ecosystem provided you?
FJ: The Boston ecosystem is perfect for startups and for anyone interested in tech.We are constantly reminded of how deep and supportive the network here is. We’re continuously leveraging the Boston community to help grow the overall ecosystem, support our fellow entrepreneurs and founders, and serve our community members.
GC: What’s the best/worst piece of advice you were given along the way?
FJ: We have received a ton of advice so far! The thing that sticks out the most is to stay true to our mission and undertake our decisions thoughtfully and with care.
GC: What does the future hold for SGO?
FJ: We’re working on expanding our services to our community and to sponsors, offering more types of events – we even started a brand new podcast – and growing the business!
